Optical Methods for Food Quality Analysis and Safety Control

Call for Papers

Optical methods concern the use of ultraviolet, visible, and infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum and the measurement of the absorbed, reflected, transmitted, scattered, and fluorescence emitted light from a sample positioned in the path of the incident beam. Currently, optical methods are largely used in many industrial fields. Thanks to the rapid development in optical instrumentation software and hardware, the application of these techniques has expanded into many areas of food research. Optical methods have become a powerful, fast, and nondestructive tool for food quality analysis and safety control.

The aim of this special issue is to offer an overview of the recent advances in the use of optical methods for food quality analysis and safety control. At this aim, original research papers, as well as review articles, will be published to show the diversity of the new developments in these areas and their wide dissemination in the field.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Optical instrumentation developments for food quality and safety evaluation
  • Optical techniques for food production process monitoring
  • Chemometrics for food quality analysis and safety control
  • Multivariate methods for quantitative analysis for food authentication
  • Innovative optical methods for detection of food contaminants, ingredients, and additives also related to health issues
  • Optical techniques for food shelf life monitoring
  • Optical sensing and biosensing for food quality and safety
