Evidence on Healthcare Facilities Design and Technological Strategies for the Improvement of Users’ Health Status

Call for Papers

Healthcare facilities are complex compared to other building types because of their articulation, organization, technological equipment, regulatory requirements, and the large amount of users, and workers, and so forth, including, particularly, patients with identifiable vulnerabilities, with a dedicated mission to heal and promote the public health. Designing a healthcare facility requires a multidisciplinary approach in order to effectively organize and manage buildings through design, construction, and operations; further, the project should be flexibly designed to enable it to adapt to the rapid changes catalyzed by research innovations and epidemiological trends.

The complexity of healthcare facilities should be analyzed at several scales. The present call for papers aims to collect contributions from both medical and design and management fields related to best practices, design tools and technological strategies with evidences on the improvement of health status of users and providers in healthcare settings, and complementary opportunities for the built environment and technologies more broadly to contribute to health promotion and stem its contribution to adverse health outcomes. This special issue aims at creating a multidisciplinary forum of discussion on approaches and solutions that healthcare organizations can apply to enhance and amplify immediate health outcomes and the healing continuum.

The accepted papers will show a diversity of new developments in healthcare facilities, such as health centers, rehabilitation centers, and community health centers. This issue accepts high quality articles containing original research results of exceptional merit, and it will let the readers of this journal know more about new strategies to be applied in hospital design, management, and operations.

The call for papers invites scientists, scholars, and professionals to present their current research topics with new research contributions in this field, supported by data, analysis and investigations, predictive models, and economic benefits and impacts, as well as design strategies and so on. In addition, investigations and analysis with negative results, if properly demonstrated, are accepted to demonstrate approaches that deserve rethinking so as to avoid undesirable results and to positively influence future design trends.

Multidisciplinary research works, carried out by physicians, designers, managers, scholars, environmental psychologists, and so on, are particularly appreciated. Papers must make a substantial new contribution and authors must explicitly present scientific advances and measurable health and social benefits.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Evidence-based design in healthcare environments and management and operational processes
  • Health statistics related to users’ benefits with the introduction of medical equipment and devices, technological solutions, and design strategies
  • Postoccupancy Evaluations related to applied design and technological strategies and solutions
  • Data analysis and Investigations of the quality of services and the effects of the improvements
  • Simulations and performance improvements of processes
  • Literature and systematic reviews on the field
