Image and Signal Analysis Methods in Dentistry

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

Imaging techniques are finding use in many areas of dentistry. This is conducive to the digitalization of dentistry and its increasing treatment and diagnostic demands. In many areas of dentistry, such as orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery, but also periodontics or prosthetics, only a correct diagnosis allows for the correct treatment plan, which is the only way to restore the patient's health. The diagnosis and treatment plan is based on the specialist's knowledge, but is subject to a large, multi-factorial risk of error. Therefore, the introduction of digital visualization is a great hope for both the physician and the patient.

Applications in the field of dental science vary according to needs - from dental emergencies through differential diagnosis of pain in the mouth, interpretation of radiographic images, and analysis of facial growth in orthodontics, to planning the optimal prosthetics for a particular patient. With the rise of intraoral scanner technology and widespread use of computed tomography in treatment planning, large numbers of tissue images are being scanned and represented and archived digitally. Advances in medical image analysis allow us to address medical image analysis tasks in commercial solutions with sufficient performance in terms of accuracy, reliability and speed. This or similar approaches may develop in the future into an interesting link between medical image analysis and decision support systems on the basis of semantic and reasoning technologies.

This Special Issue aims to publish research and review articles on the fundamental and applied research aspects of engineering involved in the development of image and signal analysis with processing methods in dentistry.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • OCT and microOCT image analysis in dentistry
  • Interpretation of electromyography in patients with maxillofacial disorders
  • Quantitative analysis of dental images and 3D scans in orthodontics, dental and maxillo-facial surgery
  • Clinical spectrophotometry in measurements of dental fillings and prosthetic reconstructions
  • Efficacy of digital intra-oral radiography, laser-scanning devices and photography in clinical dentistry
  • Identification of accuracy of dental models using image processing and analysis
  • Application of artificial neural networks in dentistry
  • Fully automated cephalometric analysis using neural networks
  • Deep learning for 2D and 3D data in dentistry
