Description

Machine learning models have been extensively utilised to analyse medical images in the past few decades. However, machine learning models require efficient feature extraction and selection techniques as pre-processing tools to analyse medical images. Thus, the feature extraction and selection techniques limit the performance of machine learning based medical image analysis.

Recently, many researchers have utilised deep learning models for medical image analysis. Deep learning models utilise various filters at each layer to extract and select potential features automatically. Although deep learning models perform significantly better compared to machine learning models, training is very expensive, in terms of both time and resources. Also, due to the complex background of images, some time potential features may not be extracted by the filters used in deep learning models. To overcome these issues, transfer learning models can be used. This is an approach used in deep learning (and machine learning) where knowledge is transferred from one model to another. In essence, transfer learning provides pre-trained models which provide high-level features to deep learning models. This has therefore led to more attention being given to deep learning models as a means to analyse medical images.

The aim of this Special Issue is to demonstrate the new development and application of deep transfer learning models in medical image analysis. The goal is to promote research and development of deep learning in biomedical images and analysis by publishing high-quality research papers in this interdisciplinary field that can profoundly impact the future of the medical industry.
