Innate immune responses are activated in term, but not in the first-trimester, human placental explants infected with LCMV. Term and the first-trimester placental explants were analyzed for mRNA expression by RT-PCR. (a) ifn-α, (b) il-6, (c) tnf-α, (d) ifn-γ, (e) il-28, and (f) il-29.
