Intracellular Pathogens: Approaches of Immune Evasion and Host Response for Diagnosis and Therapeutics

Call for Papers

Despite continuous research programs and control strategies, infections have been a global health concern. Vector borne and zoonotic infections, neglected tropical diseases, chronic viral diseases, and acute respiratory infections are among few members of infectious group that collectively cause largest number of morbidites and mortalities worldwide. Furthermore, several of the deadliest intracellular pathogens manage to escape the host immune patrolling and cause disease by multiplying inside human cells. These pathogens have evolved the immune escape strategies and overcome immune defense primarily by macrophages and in turn exploit host macrophages for residence and replication. To name a few, such intracellular pathogens include bacteria (Francisella, Salmonella, Listeria, Neisseria, Rickettsia, and Mycobacterium), protozoans (Leishmania, Trypanosoma, Plasmodium, and Toxoplasma), fungi (Histoplasma, Cryptococcus, and Pneumocystis), and viruses. Lifelong persistence and chances of reinfection even after a sterile cure further add to the complexity of intracellular pathogens borne diseases.

This special issue aims to discuss and present original research articles and reviews that will provide an insight of current situations of life threatening intracellular pathogens and the strategies by which parasite can avoid immune strategies as well as strategies of host immune response to control pathogen. This knowledge will contribute to improve our understanding of intracellular pathogen derived infections and to unravel the complex mechanisms associated with host-parasite interaction and advance policies to improve counter-measures, diagnostics, and treatment.
