Getting to the Point: Accuracy of Point Count in Monitoring Ecosystem Change

Box-and-whisker plots of 𝑃 values resulting from the comparison of true ( πœ‡ between 5 and 30%; 𝜎 = πœ‡ ) and estimated benthic cover (1 to 50 points per frame), based on 500 replicate simulations. The 𝑃 value ( 𝑦 -axis) represents the probability that the distributions of estimated and true percent cover have the same location (Wilcoxon test). Horizontal line: statistical significance level ( 𝛼 = 0 . 0 5 ). Above this line are plotted simulations for which there was not a statistically significant difference between true and estimated cover distributions. Below it, there was a significant difference between true and estimated cover, based on the Wilcoxon test.
