(a) Oxygen molecules absorbed on the NW surface capture free electrons from the NW to generate . A depletion region is formed under the surface of ZnO NW; (b) some ions lose their electrons when the UV light illuminates the ZnO NW. The oxygen escapes from the surface of the nanowire.
