Stabilization of carbyne using poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). (a) Chemical structure of PDDA. The quaternary ammonium salt is exceptionally stable even under harsh conditions. (b) PDDA coating of a single carbyne chain. A scissoring conformation of methyl groups from the pyrrolidine rings (based upon the 3D projections as pictured) is proposed to bring the positively charged nitrogen atoms closer to the electron-rich triple bonds.
