The Influence of Physical Activity on Obesity and Health

Obesity is regarded as a major risk factor for disease. Rates of both total and abdominal obesity have increased in many countries in recent years, and this may adversely affect public health. Increased levels of physical activity could, on the one hand, combat fatness and, on the other hand, ameliorate obesity-related health disturbances. The prevalence of obesity in the pediatric population is also a serious health issue. Several approaches, including increased levels of organized physical activity (at schools, universities, and local communities) and behavioral interventions aiming to elevate levels of physical activity, have been used in an effort to decrease body fatness and disease risk with varying levels of success.

We invite authors to submit original research and review articles that will present new data on the association between physical activity, sedentary behavior, obesity and disease risk factors, and innovative approaches to help people of all ages increase and maintain adequate levels of physical activity. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Obesity and physical activity epidemiology across different ethnic groups and ages
  • Cross-sectional studies investigating the association between physical activity, obesity, and disease risk factors
  • Intervention studies examining the influence of physical activity on obesity and disease risk factors
  • Longitudinal evaluation of the interaction of adiposity and physical activity during growth and development
  • Approaches to stimulate active lifestyles and behavior change methods to promote adherence to obesity treatment/prevention tasks
  • Exercise and appetite regulation
  • Individual differences in response to exercise
  • Risks of sedentary behavior per se
  • The role of structured versus unstructured physical activity in weight control
  • Factors affecting the effectiveness of exercise for weight control
  • The effects of exercise on different components of body composition including BMI, fat mass, fat-free mass, regional adiposity, waist circumference, and intra-abdominal fat among others.
