Modeling and Optimization of Quick Response to Natural Disasters

Call for Papers

Natural disasters, such as earthquake, debris, and floods, often caused a lot of casualties and property losses. The desire for an efficient and effective response to natural disasters is calling for significant changes in our response strategy. Up to now, advanced remote sensing technologies, for example, satellites and airborne and ground-based sensors, are paving quick ways to “see” what has happened in a disaster area. In addition, artificial intelligence provides us with approaches to mine meaningful information from the sensed big data. Furthermore, many countries or people over the world would like to donate their resources, technologies, and humans to help victims of a natural calamity. Consequently, it becomes a challenge to optimally balance the relationship between the potential supply and actual demand of disaster reduction.

This special issue is to create a forum for researchers to present their original work with strong methodological focusing on the modeling and optimization related issues in the framework of disaster reduction. We believe this will benefit both academic and industrial communities. The editorial committee solicits original research papers and review articles that target the themes using advanced optimization techniques to solve these problems of a specific application.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Optimization of scheduling strategy of different remote sensing platforms for timely and dynamically imaging of disaster areas
  • Modeling and Optimization of intelligent recognizing approaches to quickly extract meaningful information from multiple-source data
  • Modeling and Optimization of decision-making for disaster reduction
  • Modeling and Optimization of minimal and maximal needs for different areas
  • Modeling and Optimization of limited rescue resource distribution for victims of a natural calamity
