Molecular Mechanisms of Antibiotic Resistance in Gram-Negative Pathogens

Call for Papers

Emergence of antibiotic resistance among Gram-negative pathogens is recognized as a great public health threat affecting humans all over the world. Multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens not only have emerged in the hospital environment but are detected in community settings, suggesting that the reservoirs of these resistant pathogens are present outside the hospitals environments. Survival of the pathogens is a consequence of a vast genetic plasticity of bacterial pathogens mediating specific responses that result in mutational adaptations, acquisition of genetic material, or alteration of gene expression causing resistance to nearly all available antibiotics.

The aim of the special issue is to tackle the problem of antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative pathogens. A complete understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which Gram-negative pathogens become resistant to antibiotics is very important to design novel strategies to counter the resistance threat. We would like to invite researchers to submit original research articles and reviews on molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative pathogens in hospital- or community-acquired settings. Another important aspect is how to defend microbial resistance; this area may include investigations directed at interference with antibiotic resistance mechanisms.

  • Epidemiology of antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative pathogens
  • Molecular investigation of β-lactamases, extended spectrum β-lactamases, and carbapenemases in Gram-negative pathogens
  • Efflux pump and development of new inhibitors
  • Quinolones resistance in Gram-negative isolates
  • Role of outer membrane proteins and porins in the resistance among Gram-negative bacteria
  • Outbreak of colistin resistance among Gram-negative bacteria
  • Virulence gene profiles of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative isolates
  • Antibiotic resistance of Gram-negative pathogens in environmental, plants, and food
  • Role of antibiotic resistance in the pathogenesis of chronic diseases
  • Interference with antibiotic resistance mechanisms
