The Macrophage Inflammatory Proteins MIP1 (CCL3) and MIP2 (CXCL2) in Implant-Associated Osteomyelitis: Linking Inflammation to Bone Degradation

Figure 1

Gene expression of CXCL2 and CCL3 in tissue and blood of patients with implant-associated infection or aseptic loosening. Gene expression of CXCL2 and CCL3 was determined by qRT-PCR in tissue of patients with infection (a) or with aseptic loosening (b). Samples were collected from osteolytic sites and for comparison from muscle. Each symbol represents one patient. (c) Gene expression at osteolytic sites was compared between patients with implant infection ( ) and patients with aseptic loosening ( ), as was expression of CD14 and cathepsin K (d). The groups were analysed by Mann-Whitney test, and the respective values are given. (e, f) Gene expression was analysed in blood samples obtained from patients with infection and those with aseptic loosening. Basic expression of CXCL2 and CCL3 did not differ between the groups, and cells could be stimulated to a similar extent.
