Ouabain Affects the Expression of Activation Markers, Cytokine Production, and Endocytosis of Human Monocytes

Ouabain affects the expression of CD69, HLA-DR, and costimulatory molecules on monocytes. Cells were cultured for 24 hours in the absence or presence of ouabain 10−7 M; thereafter, cells were incubated for 30 minutes with specific antibodies, as described in Methods. Scatter plots are shown for the percentage of CD69+ (a), CD80+ (b), and CD40+ (c) cells and the mean fluorescence intensities of HLA-DR (d) and CD86 (e) after 24 hours of incubation in the presence and absence of 10−7 M of ouabain. Each line represents the data from one specific donor. using two-tailed paired -test.
