Neurotrauma and Inflammation: CNS and PNS Responses

Figure 2

Macrophage accumulation and nerve pathology after PNS trauma. (a), (b), and (c) are representative images of CD11b+ cells (red staining)—which is suggestive of macrophages—in control sciatic nerves, 1 and 3 days post injury (dpi), respectively, at the distal portion of the nerve (~2 mm from the injury site). Nerve integrity ((d), (e), and (f)) is observed at the distal portion of the nerve (~2 mm from the injury site) at the same time points mentioned in (a), (b), and (c), respectively. Image (g) is a longitudinal section of injured sciatic nerve at day 3, showing accumulation of CD11b+ cells (red staining) in the entire nerve and showing augmented CD11b+ numbers at the injury site (asterisk) and distal portions of the nerve. Scale bar: (a), (b), and (c) = 30 μm; (d), (e), and (f) = 10 μm; (g) = 500 μm.
