Serotonin-Exacerbated DSS-Induced Colitis Is Associated with Increase in MMP-3 and MMP-9 Expression in the Mouse Colon

Histopathological analysis of mouse colon treated with 5-HT or/and DSS. There was no colitis in control group () or alone receiving 1.0 mg/kg () or 2.0 mg/kg 5-HT (). Mild colitis was in mice treated with 1.0% DSS (). Both mice receiving 1.0% DSS plus 1.0 mg/kg 5-HT () and 2.5% DSS () had significant severe colitis, demonstrating the increased number of infiltrating inflammatory cells, crypt loss, and erosion of the mucosa and submucosa.
