Parainflammation in Ocular Disease

Call for Papers

Inflammation is adaptive response of the immune system to noxious insults to maintain homeostasis and restore functionality. Contrary to acute stress which results in an acute inflammatory response resulting in tissue homeostasis, chronic stress is often associated with persisting tissue damage and reduced functionality. Parainflammation is a term used to describe the organisms’ defensive mechanisms against chronic stress. When parainflammatory processes become dysregulated, a permanent state of low-grade inflammation occurs. With aging of the immune system, inflammaging is associated with inadequate handling of immunological stress further contributing to dysregulated parainflammatory responses. These processes are believed to contribute to several age-related disorders.

The concepts of parainflammation and inflammaging in ocular disease are relatively new and promising areas of research. The pathways and mediators that underlie these inflammatory processes are complex and incompletely understood. It remains to be determined whether manipulation of these pathways, through either drug intervention or other means, such as physical exercise may help prevent or slow down the disease process. A better understanding of these complex underlying mechanisms may help us understand why disease occurs, how we can predict disease, and what measures we can take to prevent or slow down disease.

In this special issue on inflammation in ocular disease, we will publish original research papers and review articles that focus on mechanisms and processes involved in parainflammatory processes and inflammaging in relation to ocular health and disease. Papers which focus on influencing these processes using drugs, dietary supplements, lifestyle measures, or genetic therapy are also encouraged.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • The role of parainflammatory processes in the treatment of age-related eye diseases
  • Mediators of inflammation in various types of dry eye disease syndromes (DEDS)
  • The role of antioxidants in targeting the mediators of inflammation for the treatment of ocular disease
