Neuroinflammation: A Bolero between Neurons, Astrocytes, and Microglia

Call for Papers

A consolidated paradigm has been established in neuroscience field in recent years: under damaging conditions, either diseases, toxic insults, or both, the central and the peripheral nervous systems are subject to chronic or acute inflammation. Microglia and astrocytes are activated, secreting proinflammatory cytokines that target neuronal cells, shaping their metabolism and their survival. However, neuronal cells are not only passive bystander in this process, releasing neurotransmitter which could influence surrounding cells, astrocytes, microglia, and other neurons.

In this special issue, mechanism of interplay between these three partners will be discussed. We will welcome high original research papers aiming at uncovering the principal mediators of neuroinflammation either in chronic (i.e., neural disease as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and others) or in acute conditions (i.e., traumatic brain injury, drug administrations, and others). Review papers describing the state of the art in this field are also welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Role of inflammation in neurodegenerative disease
  • Cytokines releases in acute neuroinflammation
  • Inflammation and differentiation of microglia, astrocytes, and neurons
  • Interplay between astrocytes, microglia, and neurons in neuronal regeneration
  • Peripheral immune response in neuroinflammation
  • Neuroinflammation and aging
  • Drug therapies in neuroinflammation
