Technology-Enhanced Mobile Learning Environments

Call for Papers

In recent years, technology has expanded in such a way that, nowadays, any person is surrounded by multiple devices (tablets, smartphones, smartwatches, smart devices, etc.) that are connected together to provide services to the user while on the move. These new types of scenarios surrounding us, called Mobile Multidevice Environments, consist of multiple interactive devices with at least one mobile or wearable component. The mobility they provide brings about new possibilities in different fields: education, healthcare, entertainment, and so on. In order to enhance and enrich, in a noninvasive way, the real world with the digital one, technology-enhanced mobile environments have recently become a new field of research and development that poses new technological and social challenges. Among the technological challenges, we can highlight the heterogeneity of software platforms (iOS, Android, etc.), cross-device information exchange, and so on. Among the social challenges, we can highlight students’ engagement, personalized learning experiences, and so on. Especially in the field of education these new scenarios have brought about drastic changes affecting the way interactive systems are conceived, developed, and used in this field. Indeed, technology-enhanced learning (TEL) provides services to support better administration, resource provision, and support for independent learning, specifically by identifying creative ways in which mobile technologies can be employed to support learning activities.

This special issue seeks to contribute to the emerging topic of technology-enhanced mobile learning environments, with a selection of original and high-quality articles that discuss, with an adequate balance of theory and practice, issues related to this field.
