Quality Assessment and Management of mHealth Applications

Call for Papers

The proliferation and improvement of sensing, processing, and connectivity services in mobile devices allow the users to install and execute a variety of evermore complex apps. A primary field of application is healthcare. Indeed, a plethora of mobile apps are available on the market for the monitoring of either vital signs or physical activities and human behaviors. More sophisticated mHealth applications advocate self-diagnosis capabilities, such as those for skin lesions detection.

All such mHealth systems should ensure a certain degree of quality because a system failure or misuse may expose their users to unacceptable risks. Moreover, some kinds of mHealth applications fall under the definition of medical device. In such a case, the realization of the system is affected by regulations that pose stringent quality requirements.

This special issue aims at attracting submissions that propose the use of methods and methodologies to assess and improve the quality of mHealth apps, as well as criteria for evaluating and reporting the effectiveness of these solutions. New techniques, tools, and methodologies devised to improve the effectiveness of any of the possible layers in an mHealth system, from communication channels to user interfaces, are of interest for this special issue. Both theoretical and experimental work are solicited.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Lifestyle, well-being, and medical apps
  • Risk management and quality assurance in mHealth
  • Requirements engineering for mHealth
  • Verification and validation of mHealth and medical apps
  • Usability and human factors in mHealth and medical apps
  • Security and privacy issues
  • Methodologies and design patterns
  • mHealth and medical apps as medical devices
  • Incident management and postmarket surveillance
  • Impact of new technologies (e.g., 5G)
  • Studies and reports about the quality of mHealth and medical apps
  • Applications and experiences
