Fuzzy Applications in Engineering and Risk Management

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

Since the publication of Lotfi A. Zadeh’s seminal paper “Fuzzy Sets” in 1965, there has been a constant growth in theoretical developments and practical applications of fuzzy set theory and related mathematical tools. Due to their versatility, these tools have been widely applied both in industry and academic research to decision making and economics. They can efficiently represent and handle uncertain and vague information such as subjective judgements, non-precise observations on variables, or ill-defined relations between variables. Additionally, they make implementing computations or identifying patterns in data much easier. To do so, fuzzy set theory provides a lot of mathematical techniques in fields such as Industrial engineering (IE) expert systems, soft computing, management etc. Industrial engineers are concerned with reducing production costs, increasing efficiency, and improving the quality of products and services. Fuzzy set approaches are usually most appropriate when human evaluations and the modeling of human knowledge are needed. IE uses a significant number of applications of fuzzy set theory.

Risk management has long been an important area of engineering and environmental research. Among the risk factors, quantitative and qualitative parameters can be observed as well, and these kinds of systems are full of uncertainty and subjectivity in the data and in the evaluation process. The above characteristics justify the use of soft computation methods, especially fuzzy logic-based models.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to gather a collection of articles reflecting the latest developments in different fields of industrial engineering, new developments of classical results, manufacturing systems, technology management, and other advanced topics of high potential for future research and applications in different field of risk management and industrial engineering using fuzzy models.
