Nonlinear systems have received increasing amounts of attention as they are widely available and cover areas as diverse as automotive applications, aerospace systems, thermal control applications, manufacturing, biological systems, and so on. To support these applications, various pioneering control methodologies have been investigated.

However, owing to the complexity of the controlled plant, unknown working surroundings, and strict task requirements, the estimation and control design procedure unavoidably suffers from multiple constraints in real-world applications, e.g., limited computational capability, constrained signal transmission and updating frequency in the sensor to controller or controller to actuator channels, limited knowledge of the systems, prescribed performance constraints, noisy measurements, physical constraints or a mixture of previous factors. Taking the trajectory tracking control issues for quadrotors as an example, the outdoor operation of quadrotors is normally disturbed by unknown uncertainties, such as wind gust or inaccurate inertial moments. Moreover, the limitation of onboard power and computation resources is another essential factor that should be explicitly handled in control realization to prolong system operational time and ensure mission completion. Additionally, rigorous physical constraints on position or velocity should be imposed on quadrotors to eliminate the obstacle collision risk in unfamiliar environments. Furthermore, to assure safe operation and system performance at a desired level, some characteristic indices such as maximum overshoot, settling time, and tracking accuracy should be regulated as a prior. Therefore, the appearance of the aforementioned multiple constraints makes the estimation and control realization for nonlinear systems a challenging yet meaningful topic.

The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together papers on estimation and control for nonlinear systems subject to multiple constraints with different design principles, novel technologies, and new emerging applications. Original research as well as review articles presenting recent advances in these fields are welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Estimation and control of nonlinear systems in the presence of state constraints
  • Estimation and control of nonlinear systems in the presence of system uncertainties
  • Estimation and control of nonlinear systems in the presence of limited communication/computational resources
  • Estimation and control of nonlinear systems in the presence of incomplete or noisy knowledge of the system state
  • Estimation and control of nonlinear systems with prescribed performances
