Mechanism of the otolith organs, showing their sensitivity to linear acceleration and head tilt. These drawings illustrate the shearing force in the plane of the utricular otolith membranes. For instance, a 30-degreeshead-tilt elicits a force equivalent to 0.5 G in the plane of the utricular macula. The same stimulus can be achieved using a linear acceleration of 0.5 G with the head upright.
