Evaluation of cell proliferation in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of iNOS+/+ versus iNOS−/− mice, at several time points after SE, assessed by BrdU incorporation. Following seizure induction, there is a time-dependent increase in cell proliferation in iNOS+/+ animals, peaking at day 5. In iNOS−/− mice, only 7 days after SE the number of BrdU+ cells significantly increases in the SGZ. At least 3 surviving animals were used for each experimental group. Data are expressed as means ± SEM. Two-factor ANOVA: = 3 to 5, < 0.01 and < 0.001, significantly different from iNOS+/+ saline; < 0.001, significantly different from iNOS−/− saline.
