Mitochondrial homeostatic mechanisms altered during aging. (1) Impaired mitochondrial function correlates with excessive ROS production and damaged mitochondrial DNA. (2) Alterations in the excitation-contraction coupling and impaired mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake had been found in aged skeletal muscle fibers. (3) Fused phenotype may be increased during aging.
