Downregulation of Glutathione Biosynthesis Contributes to Oxidative Stress and Liver Dysfunction in Acute Kidney Injury

<div>Proposed mechanism of kidney ischemia-reperfusion induced reduction of hepatic glutathione biosynthesis. Renal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) inhibits glutathione biosynthesis in the liver through (1) a decrease in the expression of cystathionine <i>γ</i>-lyase (<i>CSE</i>) in the transsulfuration pathway which elevates homocysteine and reduces<i> de novo</i> cysteine production and hydrogen sulfide (H<sub>2</sub>S) generation and (2) a decrease in the expression of glutamate-cysteine ligase (<i>GCL</i>) which is a key enzyme responsible for glutathione biosynthesis.</div>
