Curcumin Inhibits Acute Vascular Inflammation through the Activation of Heme Oxygenase-1

Global inhibition of HO activity by ZnPP abolishes the inhibition of acute vascular inflammation by curcumin in NZW rabbits. Acute vascular inflammation was induced by placing a silastic collar around the left carotid artery in the rabbits that received the control diet or control diet supplemented with 0.3% curcumin (wt/wt) with and without ip ZnPP (7.5 mg/kg) injections for 4 weeks. Representative sections from the collared and noncollared arteries immunostained for VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 are shown in panel (a) (bar = 50 μm). Quantification of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 is shown in (b) and (c), respectively. The results are represented as the mean ± SEM, per group, indicates compared to control.
