Protective Effects of a Polyphenol-Rich Extract from Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels Leaf on Oxidative Stress-Induced Diabetic Rats

Effects of PESc in an in vivo diabetic model. Male Wistar rats (black squares, ALX, ) were treated with PESc (50 mg/kg/d) from day 7 (blue squares, ALX-P, ) or from day 0 (red triangles, ALX-PP, ). At day 7, all animals received an injection of alloxan (150 mg/kg, ip) to induce diabetes as explained in the Materials and Methods section. During the experimental procedures, changes in body weight (a), serum blood glucose (b), triglycerides (c), and total cholesterol (d) levels were determined. In addition, the TyG index (e) was obtained from data in (c) and (d). Results shown correspond to the mean ± SEM; versus ALX and versus ALX-P.
