Oxidative Stress-Related Oral Disease and Targeted Therapy

Description

Oral diseases pose a major health burden for many countries and affect people throughout their lifetime, causing pain, discomfort, disfigurement, and even death. An in-depth understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of different oral diseases is vitally important for the maintenance of public oral health.

Recently, it has been revealed that oral diseases such as periodontitis, pulpitis, oral cancer, and some mucosal or salivary glands diseases are related to oxidative stress (OS). The inflammatory or immune responses in these diseases are closely related to local or systemic redox status. In these diseases, OS induces detrimental damage via cellular lipid peroxidation, protein denaturation, and DNA breakage, which contributes to the onset and/or development of these oral diseases. Investigating the key targets of OS-involved mechanisms and the specific therapeutic methods against them bears a great value in preventing and/or treating these OS-related oral diseases. However, research about OS in the molecular pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of oral diseases is still limited.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collect original research and review articles investigating the role of OS in molecular pathophysiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of oral diseases, including but not limited to, periodontitis, pulpitis, oral cancer, oral mucosal diseases, and salivary glands diseases.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Redox status changes in oral diseases
  • Biomarkers of oxidative stress in oral diseases
  • Methods/assays to evaluate oxidative stress levels in oral diseases
  • The roles of interaction between oxidative stress and immune, inflammatory interactions in oral diseases
  • Oxidative stress-related molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways in oral diseases
  • Oxidative stress and oral diseases related risk factors, such as tobacco, areca quid, alcohol, and viruses
  • Oxidative stress in the correlation of systemic diseases and oral diseases
  • Benefits of oxidative stress-relieving approaches in oral diseases
  • Potential targets of preventive and therapeutic approaches in oral diseases in regulating oxidative stress
  • Novel therapeutic interventions for immune, inflammatory, and oxidative responses in oral diseases
  • Clinical translational research of novel therapeutic methods/pharmaceuticals in oral diseases
