Mitochondrial Quality in Neurodegenerative and Metabolic Diseases

Call for Papers

Age-related metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases are increasing to epidemic proportions in industrialized countries. Although big efforts have been made in order to develop effective therapies to combat these diseases, advances in this field are hindered by our limited knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying these conditions. Despite the phenotypic diversity of these diseases, in the last years, impaired mitochondrial function has emerged as a common alteration in many of them. Hence, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases have been associated with the presence of mitochondrial alterations, including reduced mitochondrial activity, defects in mitochondrial dynamics and trafficking, and alterations in mitochondrial quality control.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles addressing the role of mitochondrial alterations in connection with metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. We encourage submissions aimed at elucidating the molecular mechanisms linking these mitochondrial abnormalities with the development of these diseases.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Mitochondrial bioenergetics and energy metabolism
  • Mitochondrial dynamics
  • Mitochondrial quality control
  • Autophagy/mitophagy
  • Mitochondrial trafficking
  • Mitochondria-ER communication
  • Mitochondrial oxidative stress

Authors can submit their manuscripts through the Manuscript Tracking System at

Papers are published upon acceptance, regardless of the Special Issue publication date.
