Recent reports suggest that 60 million Americans have cardiovascular diseases (CVD) which are the most frequent cause of death in the US. CVD are a significant public health problem and are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. CVD are also common in eating disorders, cirrhosis, renal diseases, and cancer therapy. Although interventions aimed at regulating risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, obesity, and diabetes could decrease the incidence of CVD burden, the principal underlying causes of CVD in different populations remain elusive and potential novel therapies rather than existing statin therapy are still required to control risk factors as well as CVD. Recent studies indicate that increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) associated with oxidative stress could alter immune and inflammatory responses involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, which also may include atherosclerotic processes. However, a better understanding of the signaling mechanisms that interplay between immune, inflammatory, and oxidative responses that lead to CVD is of utmost significance for developing novel therapeutic approaches. The purpose of the this special issue is to assemble information from preclinical as well as clinical studies in order to provide an additional opportunity to identify the potential molecules/mechanisms that disrupt equilibrium between immune, inflammatory, and oxidative responses involved in the pathogenesis of CVD.
We invite researchers to contribute to this special issue in the form of original research articles and review articles that will further strengthen our efforts to understand the cellular and molecular mechanistic insights into the role of oxidative, immune, and inflammatory responses in cardiovascular disease.
