Involvement of Nutritional and Environmental Factors in Parkinson’s Disease Pathology

Call for Papers

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease. Although the exact mechanisms underlying PD pathogenesis are yet to be defined, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammation may contribute to this process. A number of environmental risk factors have been suggested to play a key role in the development of PD but because they are readily modifiable, nutritional factors have received considerable attention over the years. With regard to neurodegeneration, nutrition affects multiple aspects of neurodevelopment, neurogenesis, and the functions of neurons and neural networks. Nutrition-gene interactions play a critical role in dysfunction and disease. Several preclinical and epidemiological studies have indeed underlined the impact of nutrients such as dairy products, numerous vitamins, caffeine, and iron on PD pathogenesis despite the fact that some of these associations are still being debated. To address these unresolved issues in the recent years, several researchers have demonstrated the role of dietary components in neurodegenerative diseases. This special issue aims to create a platform to discuss specifically the impact of environment and nutrition on PD pathogenesis. The articles should be aimed at showing recent advances in these research areas.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Effect of fat-rich diet on neuronal health in PD
  • Nutrition and synaptic plasticity
  • Diet-induced epigenetic changes in PD
  • Environmental enrichment and PD pathology
  • Effect of carbohydrates-rich diet on neuronal health in PD
