<table>A proposed mechanism of ligand-mediated activation of PPARs. In response to ligand binding, PPARs undergo conformational changes in protein structure. This allows dissociation of corepressor proteins which inhibit transcription and the recruitment of co-activators. PPAR-RXR heterodimers bind to specific recognition sites of DNA, termed peroxisome proliferator activated receptor response elements (PPREs) located in the regulatory region of target genes.</table>
