Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology: An Advancing Horizon

Description

The current practice of “Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology” (FNAC) has surpassed most expectations of what it meant to be by its inventors. The traditional manual technique of FNAC techniques has been partnered by many other minimally invasive techniques to obtain FNAC samples from deep-seated organs. These include, but are not limited to, CT-guided, ultrasound-guided, and EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies. Thus, with this employment of FNA, the cytopathologists play a pivotal role in the management and therapeutic decisions that are based on the diagnosis of these limited FNAC samples. Furthermore, the use of FNAC samples for biomarker research is advancing rapidly and is being widely investigated and applied for treatment and prognostic purposes. The use of distance learning and sharing the science related to FNA will translate into better patient care and facilitate the spread of knowledge globally for the betterment of humankind.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing efforts to understand the role and value of hands-on and various image-assisted FNAs in today's personalized medicine. We are also interested in exploring the outcomes of treatment trials, advances in molecular genetics and molecular diagnostics, and current concepts in the morphologic features/classification that can affect the treatment. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Role of FNA in breast lesions and recent advances
  • Role of various image-guided FNAs in liver lesions and recent advances
  • Thyroid FNA: diagnosis and its effect on patient management and the role of new Bethesda classification and molecular studies
  • Role of EUS- and EBUS-FNA in the lesions of deep-seated organs, especially for pancreas, lymph node, and mediastinum
