Rehabilitation for Patients with Chronic Pain

Call for Papers

The maladaptation and degeneration of peripheral tissue or central nervous system plasticity modulates pain perception. Much evidence shows that prolonged immobility period causes chronic pain due to central or peripheral sensitization. In addition, the changes in somatotopic representation of the brain are influenced by the duration of immobility and reduction of the somatosensory input caused by immobility. Particularly, disinhibition occurs in the motor or sensory area of patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). On the other hand, recent advances in elucidating the psychological or neuroscientific basis of pain have provided a new perspective to our understanding of the mechanism of pain relief. This new perspective has resulted in a new or evidence rehabilitation approach to pain relief.

We invite investigators to contribute original research and review articles that will promote the continuing efforts to understand the effects and limitations of rehabilitation for patients with chronic pain, the neural or psychological mechanisms of pain relief and pain rehabilitation, and methods to assess the effectiveness of this method in patients with neuropathic or musculoskeletal pain.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Clinical studies for rehabilitation including traditional therapeutic exercise or physical medicine in patients with chronic pain
  • A method of assessment for rehabilitation in patients with chronic pain
  • Rehabilitation of patients with fibromyalgia or CRPS
  • Mechanisms of chronic pain due to immobility
  • Neural mechanism of neurorehabilitation for pain
  • Virtual reality in the treatment of chronic pain
  • Basic animal or human research contributing to our knowledge of rehabilitation for pain relief or appearance of chronic pain
  • Development of medical devices and evaluation methods that can be used in rehabilitation for pain relief or diagnosis
