Typical nests of Abispa ephippium Perkins from Katherine, NT, Australia. (a) A newly constructed single cell nest lacking the smooth exterior mud layer that characterizes older nests. (b) A mature nest with 7 cells (funnel out of view on back side) with a visiting male lurking at the back. The wasps measure about 35 mm long.
