Safety of 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients with Sickle Cell Disease

Figure 1

Representative scans from the multimodal magnetic resonance imaging protocol from a Black 9-year-old female with hemoglobin SS phenotype. Chronic stroke is apparent (yellow arrows), with additional right parietal and frontal lobe chronic silent cerebral infarcts (blue arrows), which largely colocalize with patchy T2-hyperintense foci. On intracranial angiography, there is near-complete occlusion of the terminus of the right internal carotid artery with a very short proximal portion of the right M1 segment visible (orange arrow). Extensive collateral vessels are identified extending into the basal ganglia region on the right side. No evidence of acute infarct is visible on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).
