Functionally Improved Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Enhancing Therapeutic Potential

Call for Papers

Currently, clinical trials on various types of stem cells are being conducted worldwide. However, it is believed that stem cells themselves may have limited therapeutic and regenerative potentials in certain diseases. Although the therapeutic potentials of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in various diseases have been confirmed, the development of cell therapies using this feature has proved difficult until now due to the heterogeneity of MSCs derived from various donors and tissues and the absence of standardized protocols and culturing methods to generate such cells. To overcome this, it is necessary to improve the function of MSCs above a certain level to maximize the treatment effect beyond that achieved in studies on cell therapies based on heterogeneous naive MSCs with various characteristics.

We solicit high-quality original research articles as well as review articles, focused on the topic of functionally improved mesenchymal stem cells for enhancing therapeutic potential. In this special issue, we encourage researchers, industry professionals, biomedical engineers, technologists, and healthcare professionals specializing in research on stem cells, regenerative medicine, pharmacy, and biotechnology to submit manuscripts, which address the current advances in stem cell research related to MSCs and their functional improvement to maximize the treatment effect.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Genetic modification of MSCs for enhanced therapeutic potential
  • Mechanisms underlying the beneficial effect of modified MSCs
  • Licensing or preconditioning, culturing, and selecting methods to enhance the treatment effect
  • Other bioactive agents for enhancing therapeutic potential of MSCs
  • Novel approaches to enhance therapeutic potential of MSCs

Authors can submit their manuscripts through the Manuscript Tracking System at

Submission DeadlineFriday, 1 June 2018
Publication DateOctober 2018

Papers are published upon acceptance, regardless of the Special Issue publication date.
