Therapeutic Potential of Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Secretomes in Regenerative Medicine

Description

Therapies for many incurable genetic disorders, as well as degenerative and autoimmune diseases, are a significant focus of stem cell-based research with stem cell-derived products and biomaterials representing new hope in regenerative medicine. Administration of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived secretomes shows therapeutic potential as effects similar to those observed after transplantation of MSCs have been reported. MSC-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs), containing trophic and immunomodulatory factors, rapidly diffuse throughout the tissue, successfully attenuating tissue injury and inflammation. Importantly, MSC-derived secretomes bypass many of the limitations of MSC-based therapy, including malignant transformation, unwanted differentiation, and potential activation of the allogeneic immune response. As a result of these biological and logistical advantages over live cell therapy, administration of MSC-derived secretomes represents a new therapeutic approach for treating inflammatory, degenerative, and malignant diseases.

This special issue invites investigators to contribute original research and review articles that may provide novel insights regarding the therapeutic potential of MSC-derived secretomes.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Molecular mechanisms responsible for anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects of MSC-derived secretomes
  • The effects of MSC-derived factors on the progression of inflammatory, degenerative, and malignant diseases
  • Modulation of angiogenesis by MSC-derived secretomes
  • Identification of novel components within MSC-derived EVs
  • MSC-derived EVs as a novel treatment in regenerative medicine
  • Clinical application of MSC-derived EVs
  • Strategies to enhance paracrine potency of MSCs
  • Regulatory requirements for manufacturing and quality control necessary to establish the safety and efficacy profile of MSC-derived EVs
