Description

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are somatic stem cells that can be found in various tissues throughout development. They show a typical spindle-shaped morphology in culture, are able to differentiate into at least three lineages, and lack expression of hematopoietic markers but express CD90, CD105, and CD73. Capitalizing on their regenerative capacity, MSCs have the clinical potential to treat a wide range of pathologies. In addition, MSCs have immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing effort to understand the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of MSC. We are particularly interested in articles describing the mechanisms mediating these effects and investigating the interactions between MSCs and key players; new insights as to how those translate into therapeutic benefit using animal models; current concepts in the treatment of inflammatory or immunomodulation pathologies. Articles describing possible cross interaction between biomaterials and MSCs with immunomodulation mediated via a tissue engineering approach are also welcome. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Development and testing of the immunomodulatory properties of MSC in vitro
  • Elucidating the interactions between MSC and macrophages
  • Recent advances in the anti-inflammatory role of MSC
  • Immunomodulation properties of MSC in cellular transplantation
  • Cellular and animal models to test and understand the paracrine effects of MSC in vivo
  • Illustrating the application of MSC for immunomodulation therapy
  • Identifying the interactions between MSC and the inflammatory environment
  • New immunomodulatory molecules expression in vitro and in vivo
  • Immunomodulatory properties of differentiated cells derived from MSCs
