Description

Air transportation has become increasingly reliant on cyber technologies. Intelligent and networked air transportation systems are an essential component of national critical infrastructure. Along with the benefits of the cyber technologies, cyber threats and cyber-attacks have arisen, presenting transnational effects, as worldwide air transportation systems are interconnected. The threat posed by possible cyber incidents to air transportation is continuously evolving, with threat actors focusing on malicious intent, disruptions of business continuity, and political, financial, or other motivations. Air transportation conducts its activity, mainly relying on cyber-enabled technologies to increase safety and efficiency. The aviation industry is using a wide computer-based interconnected system, spanning from air navigation systems, onboard aircraft control and communication systems, airport ground systems, flight information systems, and many others that are used on a daily basis and for all aviation-related operations.

However, the interconnectivity of systems and dependency on information technologies have created the ideal scenario for new risks to emerge. The tendency of the aviation industry is to become increasingly digitalized. Digitalization brings along new hazards as the interactions between people and systems make the risk harder to predict. It is both urgent and important to protect aviation's critical infrastructure, information and communication technology systems, and data against cyber threats.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collect original research and review articles that present the latest theories, technologies, and experiments in the air transportation security domain.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Aviation cyber-physical system models
  • Attack detection and defense for automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast
  • Anti-spoofing for global navigation satellite systems
  • Security and privacy of aircraft communication addressing and reporting systems
  • Network and information security of system-wide information management
  • Cybersecurity architecture and technology for aviation broadband communication
  • Cybersecurity vulnerability analysis and countermeasures for avionic systems and airborne networks
  • Wireless communication security in airports
  • Sharing, trust, and privacy for flight data
  • Physical layer intrusion detection in aeronautical radios
  • Cyber threat analysis and model for air traffic management
  • Application of cryptology, artificial intelligence, and blockchain in air transportation security
  • Communication and control security of unmanned aerial vehicles
