Carotid Disease and Stroke

Description

Stroke is a major cause of disability and mortality in the world, and one of the causes of dementia. Carotid atherosclerosis is recognized as an important factor in stroke prevention. Randomized trials have shown efficacy of carotid endarterectomy in secondary-stroke prevention. Carotid stenting enables less- invasive approach to the intervention on carotid arteries. Advances in medical therapy enabled further risk reduction from stroke. Such treatments were not widely applied in previous trials. It is even more complex to decide whether to recommend revascularization for patients who have carotid stenosis and are still asymptomatic. This issue will focus on the existing ongoing research on the role of carotid disease in stroke prevention, treatment, and stroke outcome. Manuscripts of original research, review topics and clinical studies are welcome. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Neuroimaging of asymptomatic carotid disease
  • Cognitive impairment in carotid stenosis
  • Risk factors for carotid stenosis
  • Management of carotid stenosis
  • Outcome of revascularization of carotid arteries

Articles published in this special issue will not be subject to the journal's Article Processing Charges.
