A study has been made of the changes in the instantaneous plastic strain ratios along
various directions of &#x3B1;-brass sheet as a function of tensile strain. The &#x3B1;-brass sheet was
fabricated by 88&#x25; cold rolling and subsequent annealing at 450&#x2103; for 1.5 h, which lead to
complete recrystallization. The recrystallization texture of the &#x3B1;-brass sheet could be
approximated by {110} <mml:math id="E1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x2329;</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mn>110</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x0232A;</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math>. The plastic strain ratio along the rolling direction decreased
with increasing tensile strain, whereas those along 45 90 to the rolling direction were
almost independent of tensile strain. The results were in agreement with those calculated
using the recrystallization textures based on the Taylor-Bishop-Hill full constraints
model.

Variation of Plastic Strain Ratios of &#x3B1;-Brass Sheet With
Tensile Strain

New methods have recently been conceived for extracting certain intrinsic properties of
grain boundaries. Described here is a novel approach to extracting the excess free energy
and mobility functions over large components of the entire fundamental space of grain
boundary types. The theoretical approach constitutes a new form of inverse problems in
materials science, and demands geometrical and orientational characterizations of very
large numbers of triple junctions. The experimental approach demands new levels of
automation of orientation imaging microscopy, and calibrated serial sectioning to
overcome the opacity problem in electron diffraction. The main threads of the approach
(theoretical, numerical and experimental) are described in this paper.

Advances in the Mesoscale Approach to Structure-Sensitive
Properties Relations in Polycrystalline Materials

Temperature dependency of the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) was studied at 4.2&#x2013;
300K in SmFe2 ferromagnetic compound having spin-reorientation temperature near
190 K. We have found a strong effect of the magnetic texture on TEC of this high magnetostrictive
compound at the spin-reorientation phase transition from [1 1] to [1 10] easy
direction. The substantial role in the texture formation is expected to belong to atoms of
hydrogen that are always present in a small amount in the compounds of such type.

Thermal Expansion Anomalies at Spin-Reorientation in
SmFe2: the Role of the Magnetic Texture

Thermal stability of induced magnetic anisotropy (IMA) was studied in a course of subsequent
annealings without any external effects for already field- or stress-annealed specimens
of the nanocrystalline Fe73.5Cu1Nb3Si13.5B9 and amorphous Fe3Co67Cr3Si15B12
alloys. For these alloys the dependence of IMA thermal stability on the magnitude of the
IMA constant (Ku) and temperature of stress-annealing was investigated. For the nanocrystalline
alloy thermal stability of field- and stress-induced anisotropy with identical Ku
was compared. It was shown that nanocrystalline specimens with identical Ku values after
field- or stress-annealing have identical thermal stability of IMA. This can point to a
similarity of the mechanisms of IMA formation after field- or stress-annealings. Thermal
stability of stress-induced anisotropy in the nanocrystalline alloy with Ku value less than
1000 J/m3 and the amorphous alloy with Ku less than 100 J/m3 depends on the value of Ku.
For both stress-annealed nanocrystalline and amorphous alloys magnetic anisotropy
induced at higher temperatures is more stable because more long-range and energy-taking
processes take place at these temperatures.

Thermal Stability of Field- and Stress-Induced Anisotropy in
Nanocrystalline Fe-Based and Amorphous Co-Based Alloys

We investigated the effect of high hydrostatic pressure on the normal grain growth in 2-D
aluminium foils. The time dependence of the mean grain area was obtained. It was shown
that normal grain growth takes place both at atmospheric pressure and under high
hydrostatic pressure. The grain growth rate decreases by a factor 1.3 under high pressure.
The activation volume for grain growth was 0.13 of the atomic volume. It was shown that
high pressure strongly influences the ratio oflow angle boundaries and general boundaries
at the early stages of secondary recrystallization.

Microstructure Evolution During Normal Grain Growth Under High
Pressure in 2-D Aluminium Foils

In this paper we present studies on the frequency dependence of the magneto-impedance in
the range of 0.1&#x2013;2 MHz for Fe73.5Si13.5B9Nb3Cu1 and Fe73.5Si16.5B6Nb3Cu1 nanocrystalline
ribbons, which differ in the sign of the magnetostriction constant. As cast samples
were annealed in Ar atmosphere at 560&#x2103;, with and without an DC and AC magnetic field.
At a fixed frequency, an improvement in the field annealed 13.5&#x25; Si samples, when
compared with the zero field annealed ones, can be observed. On the 16.5&#x25; Si field
annealed samples only a reduction of magneto-impedance ratio could be observed, when
compared to the non-field annealed ones. Analysis of the magnetic properties and X-ray
data shows that the observed changes in magneto-impedance effect are consequence of the
induced magnetic anisotropy.

Influence of Various Heat Treatments on Giant Magnetoimpedance
Effect in Nanocrystalline FeSiBNbCu Ribbons

For nanocrystalline alloy Fe73.5Cu1Nb3Si13.5B9 thermomechanical treatment was carried
out simultaneously with nanocrystallizing annealing (1) or after it (2). It was shown that a
change in magnetic properties for the case 1 is essentially greater than for the case 2.
Complex effect of thermomagnetic and thermomechanical treatments on magnetic properties
was studied in the above-mentioned nanocrystalline alloy as well as in the amorphous
alloy Fe5Co70.6Si15B9.4., During the annealings both field and stress were aligned with the
long side of the specimens. It was shown that the magnetic field, AC or DC, decreases an
effect of loading. Moreover, the magnetic field, AC or DC, applied after stress-annealing
can destroy the magnetic anisotropy already induced under load.

Field- and Stress-Induced Magnetic Anisotropy in Nanocrystalline
Fe-Based and Amorphous Co-Based Alloys

Selective growth of {110}<mml:math id="E1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x2329;</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mn>001</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x0232A;</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math> grains in the temperature gradient annealing has been
studied in Fe&#x2013;3&#x25;Si alloy. As grains grow, the average
deviation angle from the ideal {110}<mml:math id="E2" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x2329;</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mn>001</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x0232A;</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math> orientation becomes smaller and orientation
distribution changes corresponding to that of coincidence grains
in the matrix. Secondary recrystallization temperature depends on
the orientation of secondary recrystallized grain and sharper
{110} <mml:math id="E3" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x2329;</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mn>001</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x0232A;</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math> grains grow preferentially at lower temperatures.These phenomena are explained by modified Hillert&#x27;s model of grain growth. Interfacial
energy of coincidence boundary is lower than that of general
boundary. Therefore, sharper {110}<mml:math id="E4" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x2329;</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mn>001</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x0232A;</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math> grains, which have higher frequency of coincidence grains in the
primary recrystallized matrix, suffer lower pinning effect from the second phase particles
and thus grow preferentially at lower temperatures.

Mechanism of Orientation Selectivity During Grain Growth of
Secondary Recrystallization in Fe-3&#x25;Si Alloy

The effects of superplastic deformation (SPD) on grain structure and texture evolution of
the Al 2014&#x2013;20&#x25;Al2O3 composite produced via powder metallurgical method were
investigated in conjunction with surface relief observations. Samples were deformed in
tension at different strains in the range of true strain rates 10-4&#x2013;100 S-1 at temperature
500C. It was found that SPD strains have a large effect on both texture and grain size. At
the initial stage of superplastic flow, deformation bands are formed in the aluminum
matrix along the tension direction. Simultaneously, the initial <mml:math id="E1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x2329;</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mn>111</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x0232A;</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math> fiber texture is broken and formation of <mml:math id="E2" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x2329;</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mn>110</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x0232A;</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math> fiber texture takes place. Further strain up to
50&#x25; leads to grain structure change from banded structure to
nearly equiaxed. The <mml:math id="E3" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x2329;</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mn>111</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mo>&#x0232A;</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math> fiber
texture is restored and texture intensity decreases with increasing strain. Strain rate
dependence of texture developments showed evidence for dislocation activity in examined
strain range.The relation between microstructure evolution and texture development during
superplastic deformation of the PM 2014&#x2013;20&#x25; Al2O3 composite is explained from the
viewpoint of cooperative grain boundary sliding (CGBS).

Texture and Microstructure Evolution During Superplasticity of the
Metal Matrix Composite PM 2014 Al&#x2013;20&#x25; Al2O3

Primary recrystallized Fe&#x2013;3&#x25;Si specimens containing AI and nitrided were annealed
intermittently with the heating rate of 15&#x2103;/h in 100&#x25; N2 atmosphere. The magnetic
induction B8 was measured after each annealing. The onset of secondary recrystallization
was detected by the rapid rise of B8. The maximum B8 obtained was about 1.94 T when the
onset temperature of the secondary recrystallization was around 1075&#x2103; regardless of the
initial grain size or nitrogen content.The same primary specimens were coated with MgO and annealed with the same heating
rate in 5&#x25; H2&#x2013;N2. The maximum B8 obtained was nearly same as with the above annealing
condition, however, the initial grain size and nitrogen content was quite contrary in this
annealing. The difference in the optimum grain size and nitrogen content for obtaining the
highest B8 between both annealings was explained on the assumption that <mml:math id="E1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mo>&#x2211;</mml:mo></mml:math>9 boundaries
become most mobile at 1075&#x2103; regardless of the annealing methods. Based on this finding,
the possibility of producing grain oriented silicon steel without hot band annealing and
nitriding treatment was shown.
