Synthesis of lipids by citrate and excess nitrogen limitation. Scheme of the major metabolic pathways for lipid synthesis in Y. lipolytica. The glucose undergoes glycolysis and enters in the mitochondria as pyruvate to be used in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Excess acetyl-CoA is transported from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm in the form of citrate. The cytosolic acetyl-CoA is the precursor for the synthesis of lipids in the lipid bodies.
