Architectures, Challenges and Opportunities within 6G Emerging Technologies

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

Currently, the fifth generation (5G) wireless communications have been standardized and are being deployed worldwide, with promising technologies such as millimetre wave (mmWave), massive multiple-input multiple-output (massive MIMO), device-to-device (D2D) communications, edge computing and so on. However, it will be hard for 5G to meet the requirements in the future, due to future demands of ultra-high throughput, ultra-high reliability, ultra-low power consumption, and ultra-low latency. Moreover, Internet of Things (IoT) will be redefined as Internet of Everything (IoE) resulting in super-massive connectivity, which also challenges 5G networks.

Nowadays, people begin to look forward to 6G wireless communication networks and believe that it should be ubiquitous, human-centric, full band, strongly secure, and intelligent. For instance, 6G will be a prominent player in vehicular technology, education, healthcare, and other commercial enterprises. At present, the research on 6G is in its infancy, and a number of open issues are waiting to be revealed.

The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together leading researchers in both academia and industry from diversified backgrounds to provide the scientific community with a comprehensive overview of innovative technologies, advanced architectures, and various challenges for 6G wireless networks. It solicits high-quality research articles with novel contributions and emerging technologies (e.g., terahertz (THz) communications, artificial intelligence, big data computing, telemedicine, edge computing, Software-defined networking, Non-orthogonal multiple access) to address the open issues of 6G. Review articles discussing the current state of the art are also welcomed.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Energy-efficient 6G
  • THz communications for 6G
  • IoT/IoE for 6G
  • Network architectures for 6G
  • Edge computing for 6G
  • UAV/Intelligent vehicular technology for 6G
  • Reconfigurable intelligent surface-based 6G technology
  • Remote E-health for 6G
  • Novel channel coding and modulation schemes for 6G
  • Security provisioning in 6G
  • Green networks for 6G
  • Super massive MIMO technology for 6G
