Mobile Technologies and Sensor Networks in Healthcare Environments

Call for Papers

The application and deployment of technological solutions in healthcare environments is a field in constant growth. In particular, a large amount of research activity is currently taking advantage of mobile devices and wireless networks. These systems provide help for clinicians in carrying out their work and support patients towards an improved quality of life. Meanwhile wearable and embedded sensors, capable of gathering data directly from users and their environments, are finding use in an increasing number of settings. As such, healthcare and assistive solutions offer great potential for monitoring the activities of elderly people, for supporting the self-management of patients with chronic and nonchronic conditions, as well as providing medical staff with useful tools for diagnoses and treatments.

There are several relevant conferences that present works close to these issues. The annual International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAmI) has several tracks that closely align with the topics proposed by this special issue. Thus, authors of papers from 12th edition of this conference (UCAmI’18) are invited to submit their work for consideration. However, this special issue is open to all researchers who develop technical and mobile solutions for healthcare, including health monitoring, activity tracking in assisted environments, data acquisition and analysis from wireless sensor networks, and especially innovations towards a Smart Health Environment. Please note that previously published or accepted conference papers must contain substantial new results and discussion to be considered by this special issue.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Mobile and eHealth ecosystems for wellness and disease monitoring
  • Innovations in healthcare technologies
  • Wearable and implantable devices for health monitoring
  • Data mining and analytics in health environments
  • Sensor devices and networks in biomedical monitoring
  • All-pervasive wireless systems for health applications
  • Communication and network architectures for Health
  • Internet of Things solutions in assisted and healthcare environments
  • Security and privacy in healthcare and assisted environments
  • Standards and interoperability in eHealth systems
  • Monitoring of stress, burden, and QoL of caregivers
  • Mobile and sensor solutions for active aging, social integration, and self-care
  • User interaction in assisted and healthcare mobile systems
