A Digital Mental Health Intervention for Children and Parents Using a User-Centred Design

Table 3

Visualization of the heuristic evaluation using 10 heuristic usability principles.

Visibility of system statusSystem always gives appropriate feedback such as by highlighting the selection of a date in a calendar or by highlighting the menu buttons.

Match between system and the real worldAll icons used are familiar to a normal user, so there is not any concept not following real-world conventions.

User control and freedomEvery screen has an exit button at the corner of the screen to allow the user to go back and undo their actions

Consistency and standardsThe functionality throughout the app and the terminology used are very consistent with platform conventions

Error preventionClicking on call when on the physiotherapist screen does not ask for confirmation before calling.

Recognition rather than recallEvery window has indicators for what it is displaying. The chart windows show on the top left corner the date that was chosen and the day, which helps the user recognize what they are viewing.

Flexibility and efficiency of useThe pie and bar charts are on a separate window compared with the calendar, which means that the user needs to go back to the calendar to select a day and then go to the chart windows to see the analysis. It would be better if the date can be changed within the chart windows.

Aesthetic and minimalist designAll screens in the application do not contain unnecessary elements and only contain necessary functionality

Help and documentationMostly, all buttons all over the app have a small question mark icon next to it that plainly describes the functionality.
