Robust Initialization of Active Shape Models for Lung Segmentation in CT Scans: A Feature-Based Atlas Approach

ASM initializations using on an image with varying degree of synthetic occlusion. The synthetic occlusion is generated by placing spheres, each of radius 25 mm at random locations in the CT image. The voxels of the spheres are assigned a Hounsfield unit value of 500 HU. As can be seen, the method is robust to a large amount of occlusion.
