The Cooccurrence of Obesity, Osteoporosis, and Sarcopenia in the Ovariectomized Rat: A Study for Modeling Osteosarcopenic Obesity in Rodents

The effects of ovariectomy (ovx) and 17β-estradiol (ovx + E2) on muscle mass and normalized muscle mass in rats with initial ages of five and ten months. Ovariectomy did not affect the muscle mass but decreased ratio of tibial bone mineral content to combined muscle mass in both age groups and lowered normalized values of gastrocnemius muscle to body weight in older rats that were prevented by E2 administration.
