Advances in Graves’ Disease

Description

Graves' disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Despite the recent advances in medicine, the clinical management of this disease has changed very little over the last decades. However, in the past few years some progress has been made in unraveling the molecular mechanisms of the disease. In particular, our current knowledge about the genetic and autoimmune basis of Graves' disease has recently expanded dramatically. As a consequence, there are several molecular target therapies under development that would change the treatment of the disease. Some breakthroughs have also been found after investigation in the clinical arena. Therefore, it is conceivable that in the near future clinicians will be able to carry out new strategies in the management of this condition.

The objective of the present special issue is to include reviews and original research articles about the most recent advances in this area. Basic, translational, and clinical contributions are welcome. We invite authors to submit original research articles as well as review articles related to Graves' disease. Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Emerging mechanisms of disease:
    • Microchimerism
    • The TSH-R hinge region
    • Infection
    • New genetic insights
    • The interplay of genetics and environment in GD
    • The immunopathogenetic pathways of GD
  • Emerging therapeutic strategies:
    • Blocking TSH-R antibodies
    • Low-molecular-weight antagonists for TSH receptor
    • Immunomodulation: Rituximab and Ab inhibition
    • The various aspects of corticosteroid treatment of GO
    • The burgeoning role of Selenium in the treatment of GD and GO

Articles published in this special issue will not be subject to the journal's Article Processing Charges.

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jtr/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:
